It produces warships and submarines for the Indian Navy and offshore platforms and related support vessels for offshore oil drilling. He also builds oil tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships, and ferries.

The MDL shipyards have established in the 18th century. Ownership of the yards passed through entities including the eastern and peninsular steam shipping company and the British-Indian steam shipping company.
